The Newtons: A Family Affair

by Jackie Poinier | Coaches Will Yurman and Jesse Neider

Jill Newton, mother of two and grandmother of five, still lives in the "starter home" that she moved into with husband George when they first married. Although she hates the cold, she has remained in the Skaneateles home for about 40 years. "If my kids didn't live here I could move to Florida," she said. Her children, daughter Maggie Thomson and son Andrew Newton, didn't feel the need to leave. Andrew lives next door with his wife and three children, Andrew, Molly and Maggie. Newton's daughter lives on the street over her with her husband and two sons, Greg and Grant. She noted that it's rare for families to stay as close as they do, but the family agrees that they are blessed. When parents leave on weekend getaways, Jill and George are there to help. When Jill's mother injured her hip a few weeks ago, her family was there with to support her. While Jill juggles volunteering, gardening and painting, she always makes time for the people she loves.
