The October Rose Farm produces pasture raised chickens and free range eggs to the Skaneateles community. It is owned and operated by Brian and Susan Underwood, with help from their son Glen. The Underwoods produce 25 chickens every week and around 200-dozen eggs for local supermarkets and people in the community. Additionally, the Underwoods raise turkeys for Thanksgiving and pigs for their own consumption. The animals live in large open, outdoor pens, unlike the large mega farms that produce a majority of the country's livestock. The Underwoods take pride in the way they raise their animals, " Our farm runs on a 1940's standard, but that's how it should be," they said. The Underwoods are part of a growing movement -- small farms that supply fresh food to communities like Skaneateles.
